How Nominations Work

Per Article IX of the TJR Bylaws, any member in good standing may nominate another member for an elected Executive Board position.

  • All candidates must be active members during the current fiscal year.

  • Candidates for President-Elect and Treasurer must also have been active members during the preceding fiscal year.

  • Nominations may be submitted anonymously.

  • Elections will be conducted electronically with a 14-day voting window.

  • Newly elected officers shall assume their respective offices at the conclusion of the current officers' term.

Open Positions

Position Descriptions

  • The President-Elect performs duties prescribed by the President or the Executive Board and assumes all presidential duties and powers in the President's absence. This role also supervises all committee activities, serves as an ex-officio member of all committees, chairs the Gala Banquet Committee, and acts as liaison with the National Bar Association, Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter NBA, BCBA, NAACP, and other Broward County bar associations.

  • The Recording Secretary maintains accurate written records of all Association and Executive Board meetings, manages permanent files, and has custody of all books, records, and papers. This role is also responsible for receiving and administering all correspondence, maintaining the Association's post office box, and keeping current records of all member names and addresses.

  • The Corresponding Secretary manages all organizational correspondence across relevant social media platforms, ensures notice is given for all membership and Board meetings, and monitors and updates social media channels. This officer may appoint a designee to take minutes in their absence.

  • The Treasurer manages all financial operations of the Association including accounting, receiving, depositing, and disbursing funds. This role includes reporting at each Executive Board meeting, preparing preliminary annual budgets, advising the President on financial condition, making quarterly written reports to the membership, and certifying member voting eligibility.

  • The Historian gathers, analyzes, and interprets historical information related to the Association and Black legal history. Sources include archives, court records, news files, photographs, books, and periodicals. This role also includes engaging the public through educational programs and archiving materials and artifacts related to the Association's history.

  • The Executive Board shall include a minimum of three (3) and no more than nine (9) Members-at-Large. At least one member must represent each of the following membership tiers: 0–5 years, 5–10 years, and 10 or more years. Each Member-at-Large is required to serve on at least one committee during their term.
